What is up with BJ Penn?

Edgar, Maynard and the next two in line for a title shot would all kill him, he doesn't really have a chance with them anymore. GSP already beat him twice, and the last time BJ quit and didn't even want to finish the fight. Was his face all smashed in due to some vasoline? BJ could have brought a bat into the cage and it wouldn't have helped. So should he move up to fight Silva? He would lose even worse there. So what is he, some type of glorified gatekeeper now? I mean the Hughues fight was nice and all, but it wasn't really relevant, Hughues is old news, I guess like BJ
