Is dying white blonde hair the same as dying grey hair?

I recently dyed my hair platinum blonde and it's practically white, I don't want it this blonde anymore so I want to go back to a more natural shade closer to my natural colour - 3-4 shades darker than this. I've read that you can't colour white blonde hair as it has no pigment but is this the same as grey hair?
